BULLETPROOF COFFEE

Have you ever read about, or heard someone talking about “bulletproof coffee”? I have to admit the first time my keto-success-story friend told me she put butter in her coffee I honestly don’t think I’ve heard of anything more disgusting. Who would do such a thing? And to their delicious COFFEE?! I honestly didn’t understand. I am more of a research kind of person more than a take-your-word-for-it-and-do-it-myself person so of course I had to investigate this weird concoction for myself and see what the real deal was.

Okay so the first thing I researched were the benefits (duh), and I was SUPER pleased to find that there were tons. This bio-hacking concoction perks up your brain, fuels your focus, improves gut health, promotes weight loss, suppresses your appetite, and boosts your mood. On top of all of those it works wonders in conjunction with intermittent fasting because it doesn’t cause a sudden spike in cortisol/sugar levels, though some people believe it will break your fast so you can decide for yourself if that’s the route you’d like to take. In short, um yes please to all of that.

Then I found out that you can’t just go throwing in random I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter into your morning brew; the type of butter matters tremendously. You need to use grass-fed unsalted butter like Kerrygold (or ghee for those who have trouble digesting dairy) for this to be beneficial to your body and brain; this is because the way that these cows are raised produce more omega-3’s, vitamins, and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) as well as working as an anti-inflammatory energy source.

Here are the typical ingredients used in bulletproof coffee, feel free to start with 1/2T each MCT oil and butter if you’d like:

- coffee

- 1T MCT oil

- 1T unsalted grass-fed butter or ghee (fun fact: they have packets of Kerrygold at most Starbucks locations *wink wink*)

You could also get crazy and add in other non-insulin producing things such as:

- cinnamon

- almond or coconut milk

- vanilla

- collagen (refer to previous blog about collagen)

And the most IMPORTANT PART about this delicious coffee – you MUST use a blender or at least a milk frother (also a wonderful tool for using on-the-go!). It’ll turn it into a delicious latte-like drink more than coffee with a thick layer of butter/oil on the top; trust me I’ve made this mistake and learned my lesson. If you want my opinion, I highly recommend at least trying this drink as I’ve seen nothing but amazing benefits from it, but everyone is different! You won’t know until you try right?
